Marin scooter rider dies after collision with deer

A Kentfield man died after the Vespa he was riding collided with a deer on Lucas Valley Road in San Rafael, authorities said.

The county coroner’s office identified the rider Monday as Melvin “Scott” Lockard, 64.

The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. Friday, said Roger Fielding, chief deputy coroner. Lockard was riding east near Jerry Russom Memorial Park when the deer broadsided the scooter, Fielding said.

Lockard was thrown onto the shoulder and knocked unconscious. He was having a heart attack when paramedics reached him.

Resuscitation efforts failed, and he died at the scene.

The cause of death is pending the completion of the investigation, Fielding said.
“The forensic exam is scheduled for tomorrow, but nothing is suggestive of Mr. Lockard having a medical event prior to the collision with the deer,” he said Monday.

The deer also died.
